Fishing Report for May 10, 2007
Sunshine and warmer temperatures predicted through the weekend.
San Juan River: Spring high flows are in full swing at 5140cfs. At this level, find someone to help you float it--fishing can be great, but wading is a bit dicey except for dabbling around the edges, which is less productive. The river will be returning by stages to 500cfs by May 23.
Pecos River: Last week's wet weather drove up water levels in the Pecos area, but river is coming back down now with flows just over 280cfs, returning to a more "normal" Spring pattern.
Jemez Area: A little surge courtesy of rain last week, but some nice reports from the main stem of the Jemez as well as tributaries. Should be a nice weekend over that way.
Rio Grande and tributaries: Flows are becoming steady again just over 800cfs and water is slightly more clear (always a relative thing on the Rio, of course) Should be improving with streamers and nymphs--fish are finally recovering from the glut of caddisflies earlier.
Cimmaron River: Nice reports on the lower part of the public water continue. Good reports, also, fishing from the bank at Eagle Nest Lake for trout and Yellow Perch.
Sangre de Cristo streams: Loads of cold water in mountain streams.
Chama River Watershed: Both dams have been opened widely and reports below each are poor.
Stone Lake: Good fish are being caught at Stone Lake. Pontoons or float tubes are in order now. (Remember that canoes are not permitted without outriggers.) Save some time and get your Jicarilla fishing permit from us before you head up to this special regulation lake.
Area lakes: Some Cochiti Lake picnic/recreation areas will be closed for a while (probably through Memorial Day) because extra water is being held back, raising the level of the lake temporarily by 6 feet. A surge later will simulate the flushing flows that benefit riparian areas and native fish. Meanwhile use the depth-finder to locate picnic tables serving as bass hideouts. McAlister Lake has been stocked with Rainbows to join those holdovers from last season. A boat or float tube is needed there.
